Survey response analysis

Above is the screenshot of my survey regarding game designing in www.surveymonkey.com

My discussion on this post will be regarding an analysis on my survey, which was on game designing. It consisted of 10 questions with multiple choices. Fairly enough, I have received a total of 37 responses.

The first and second question in my survey was regarding gender and age. From the 37 responses which I have received in my survey until now, the number of male respondents were 23 and female respondents were 13. Looking at the age graph and data chart, we can see the number of young adults were the highest, which is 23 out of 37 and 62.16% from the total 100%. Eleven were from 25-34 years old which takes up 29.73% and under 18 were two, and only one respondent was in the 45-54 year age mark.

Moving onto my third and fourth question which pointed out the individual’s profession and which type of game they would like to play the most. After observing the profession bar chart and data base, 29 person who responded were students and 4 were in the education, while only 2 were in management, and 1 was in manual and last 1 in administration.  The type of game each individual wanted to play is pretty interesting. I have received pretty much a widely distributed opinion from all the response in the question, ‘which type of game do you like to play’. The choice which outrun the 4 was Puzzle solving, having 27.03% percentile. Surprisingly, I did not expect it. I thought Action would win the most favours but it came out second having 21.62%, following it is Racing genre at 18.9%. The others were RPG, First person shooting and arcade each having 10.81%, 8.11% and 2.70%. The rest of 10.81% has chosen other genre, which none did not specify, so here I have been left confused. But after receiving the responses on type of game I have now a clear understanding on what type of game I will be most likely to be concentrating on designing in my project. My target is to design first person shooter and RPG type of games because I am more familiar to them, even though it will be going against the responses result. It will be a challenge for myself since I will have to now design a way better game.

On this section, which is my question 5 is providing my information on the choice of platform from the responses. As we can see, Mobile phone and PC are almost near to each other with 33.33% and 27.78%, while people are favouring PS4 more than Xbox. It is usual for PS4 to outrun Xbox since PS4 gives better gaming experience then Xbox. Respondents prefer laptop over tablet, were laptop having 11.11% and tablet at the lowest with 2.78%. The platform which I will be starting my design on will be for PC games and mobile phone. My experience on PC is more and so even though it is lower than mobile phone users, I prefer it for having more immersive gaming experience. Gamers on competitive level are all on PC, because games like CounterStrike:GO, League of Legends, are played on PC only, with big competitions from all over the world.

The next question was the budget they will be willing to play, and clearly people want to pay less money than more. This shows most of them will be satisfied with a low-graphics game but having a good gameplay experience, this is my own thought. Others who are willing to pay higher tie each other at 16.67%, while 25% would pay 21-30 pounds on their game expenditure. The lowest percentage out of the 5 choice is 41-50 pounds which is at 11.11%. After looking at this question I will be designing games worth 21-40 pounds which I know will be a better choice, to make a stable profit from the games I will be working on.

Then moving onto the next question, which is about the gaming company at their game interest. There are many game companies at the current gaming industry, and I wanted to have a target of my choice of gaming company to join in the near future. From the responses, EA is the company which stands out at the top of all the companies as follows: Microsoft, Ubisoft, Activision, Nintendo, King, 2K. Even though I will be targeting to join EA, Microsoft will be also my second option after EA.
Since getting a position in a big company like EA or Microsoft, as a game designer is not easy, so it is always better to have a second option on mind.

Then, my next question was about the difficulty level to be put on the game itself. Most people prefer to play their game at Difficult then very easy, easy or very difficult. More than half of all the respondents which is 54.05% want their game to start off at difficult level. And this is giving me a proper idea to keep the difficult level for sure in the game. Since I will be getting more gamers playing my game.

My next two question is regarding the gaming choice in-game. First one was how you like to interact with the environment in a horror game. Reaction on the 3rd option, all the freedom, was the most with 48.65%. Then people has selected ‘choose dialogue with objects, with 29.73% and at last place is Limited (only objects) which is pretty near to the 2nd option, 21.62%. Now my thoughts on the result is different than what I initially wanted. I thought choosing the dialogue, will be having most selection but now it will be more interesting and challenging on designing a game with full control given to the user on the game. I will agree it will give a more intense gaming experience to the gamer.

The last question was, if you failed to complete a task in your game what would you like to do? Here respondents clearly want to try again from the restore point after failing to do a task in the game. And on other hand, the two options which were just start from the beginning and have a different story to the outcome are pretty close to each other. So I will integrate the option to try again from the restore point in my game, which I will be designing in the near future.

So, after looking on all the responses from all the questions, I have a much better opinion on which basis my desired game will be designed. Doing this survey clearly gives me more options to work about.

Comments

  1. A very good analysis of your survey, in which you have identified some areas of development for your own game design. This includes your target market and genre. You have also given some justification for decisions made that do not follow the majority response in your survey.
I hope to see more posts like this with a high level of commentary and context to your project. Good work.
